Ordinary Seaman Thomas Brown served on H.M.S. Jed.[1] He was the son of James Brown and of Jane Thorburn Brown (Frame), of Liberton, Edinburgh.

Thomas’s ship, H.M.S. Jed was launched in July 1942 and was finally commissioned by the end of that year. It then went on to work as part of the North Atlantic convoy escort (1st Escort Group) and was subsequently involved in the sinking of U-boats U-438[2] (May), U-954[3] (May), U-334[4] (July) and U-340[5] (August.) It would continue with its North Atlantic duties until it left the UK in November 1944 for the Far East Fleet.

Before this though on the 20th of May 1944, a body was found floating on the River Foyle, Londonderry. It was soon determined that it was Seaman Thomas Brown who had been missing since the 9th, cause of death drowning. Circumstances of his death are presently unknown.

[1] HMS Jed was a River-class destroyer and was launched during July 1942.

[2] U-Boat U438 was launched September 1941 and sunk during May 1943, 48 crew members died.

[3] U-Boat U954 was launched October 1942 and sunk during May 1943, 47 crew members died.

[4] U-Boat U334 was launched August 1941 and sunk during July 1943, 47 crew members died.

[5] U-Boat U340 was launched August 1942 and sunk during August 1943, 1 crew member died and 48 survived.
