Campbell, A N (Archibald Norman)
Flight Lieutenant Archibald Norman Campbell, M.B. was the son of Archibald and Anna B. Campbell, of Limavady and husband of Margaret C. Campbell. M.B.
Archibald Campbell joined the R.A.F. in 1942, just after qualifying as a doctor and while working in Belfast City Hospital as a surgeon. He continued to work there until 1943 when he was called up for active service. At the beginning of that year, he had been married to Margaret,
After his training, Archibald had received disembarkation leave for Christmas during December 1944 and was on his way home when the plane he was travelling in unfortunately had problems and crashed.
Flight Lieutenant Archibald Norman Campbell’s body was returned to his family for burial. It is worth noting that the family grave marker has his name as Norman Archibald rather than Archibald Norman.
Archibald was laid to rest on the 15th of December 1944. There was a large turnout including many local businessmen, Boy Scouts, and members of the services. Six officers of the RAF carried his remains to his last resting place.
Another burial in Drumachose Presbyterian Churchyard, that of Leading Aircraftman Robert Desmond Connell was Archibald’s first cousin. He was also in the Royal Airforce and unfortunately died in an accident as well. His story follows this one.
