Private James Fleming was the son of John and Matilda Fleming. Born at Ringrash, Macosquin, Coleraine. He had served with the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. James originally attested on the 12th of November 1904, then served in Crete, Malta, China, India, and then France.

James landed in France on the 29th of August 1914. During the Winter of 1915/1916, estimated to be probably December 1915, James developed pulmonary tuberculosis which was attributed to exposure while in the front line. It was estimated that he would suffer from this for at least 3 years before he would recover. Being medically unfit he was discharged from the army on the 27th of June 1916. The three years from discharge were quite accurate, not for recovery as he would die nineteen days from the anniversary.
