Able Seaman Derrick Knights was the son of Wilfred John and Olga Lavinia Knights, of Ipswich, Suffolk.

Derrick died from drowning. His body was found on the 16th of January 1942. There was no evidence as to how, why, or where he entered the water.

His ship H.M.S. Sennen[1] was on escort convoy duty at the time of his death. It had originally been an American Coastguard Cutter called USS Champlain and was transferred to the Royal Navy under the 1940 loan/lease scheme during April 1941. It would ultimately survive the war, being transferred back to the USA during 1946 and then sold off in 1948.

[1] H.M.S. Sennen was a Sloop of the Banff class, loaned from the USA during 1941, then returned to them during 1946 and finally sold during 1948.
