Private George Fowler Lawson was the son of George Wilson and Alice Lawson of Main Street. His father was the owner of a chemist on the street called “Lawson’s Medical Hall”. He also had three sisters and a younger brother Hector. He was better known by his middle name “Fowler.”

Fowler had originally been posted to the 4th Hussars, but due to him suffering from epileptic fits, he was transferred to the 2nd Reserve Cavalry Regiment in Curragh camp, County Kildare, Ireland. Here he was receiving treatment for his illness.

On the 5th of March 1917, Private Lawson was on guard duty when he took a fit and unfortunately fell, hitting his head, seriously wounding himself.

This accident proved to be fatal and ultimately took Private Lawson’s life. His body was returned home for burial in Drumachose, Christ Church burial grounds.

This was the second son that his father and mother, George and Alice Lawson had lost. Hector, his younger brother, had passed away after a short illness, aged only 16 months, in October 1904. He is also buried in the same grounds. During November 1904, Fowler was also run down by a horse and cart. The injuries though were primarily to the ankle. It is unknown if it was linked to the fits, he was taking during his army career.
