Rifleman Mallett was the eldest son of Jeremiah and Emma Mallett, of 55 St. Columb’s Way, Londonderry.

After serving in India, Rifleman Jack Mallett and his regiment returned to England via Liverpool. While there (possibly in Essex), he had an argument with a fellow soldier called Robert McKaig.

Later in the evening when at the barracks Jack tried to start a fight again with Robert McKaig who then went to complain to the Serjeant Major. While doing so Jack pulled his bayonet on Robert and threatened to stab him, Robert then did the same and immediately lunged at Jack, wounding him twice.

Rifleman Mallett died later in hospital from these wounds. Robert McKaig was acquitted of all charges. His family announced that Jack died in an accident.

The 1st Battalion of the Royal Ulster Rifles were setup for home defence when they returned to England during 1940. By late 1941 their role was reassigned to an airborne battalion who would specialise in glider landings.
