Mansbridge, S G (Stephen George)

Mansbridge, S G (Stephen George)
Petty Officer 1st Class Stephen George Mansbridge, was from Kilburn in London. He had a long history with the Royal Navy, first serving with them on the 12th of May 1890. He was posted to Portrush on the 20th of February 1917.
Stephen was at his home residence with his wife during the morning of the 20th of August 1917. He was sitting in the kitchen when his wife went into the garden at around 10 am. The Petty Officer then went to get his carbine from the cupboard under the stairs to give his weapon a clean (as he always would do on a Monday morning, as an Order of Service.) As he took it down from the cupboard the weapon discharged a single, deadly, round. The bullet hit Stephen in the head, and he immediately collapsed on the floor where a pool of blood soon appeared around him.
Petty Officer 1st Class Stephen George Mansbridge’s wife returned to the house, she had not heard the shot, but she did find her husband’s lifeless body on the floor. She immediately contacted the doctor, who appeared promptly, only to find that there was nothing he could do to help this unfortunate officer.
