Rifleman Samuel McIlreavy was the son of Samuel McDowell McIlreavy and Cassie McIlreavy, of Aghadowey.

Samuel served with the 30th Battalion of the Royal Ulster Rifles, a regular infantry battalion. It had originally been the 6th (Home Defence) Battalion before changing its status and name during December 1940. It would though remain in Northern Ireland until 1943 when it was disbanded.

The battalion consisted of older men who had previous military experience but were not fit enough for active service.

Unfortunately, Samuel passed away in a military hospital in Ballydollaghan from pneumonia.
