Hazar Meah was the son of Hashi Meah and Malika Khatoon and husband of Maiyurjan, of Sera Battali, Chittagong, India. He served onboard S.S. Empire Citizen.[1]

While part of convoy OB 279, S.S. Empire Citizen started straggling behind the rest of the ships and escorts. Unknown to the crew a torpedo had already been fired just after midnight on the 3rd of February 1941. It had missed the ship.

The stalking submarine was U-Boat U107[2] and it had not left. It then fired again. This time it did not miss, and it hit just under the bridge. The ship began to take on water and sink, so the crew started the process of abandoning it.

While observing the crew abandon ship the U-Boat fired a third torpedo which also hit causing the SS Wahehe to sink even quicker by the stern.[3]

The corvette HMS Clarkia[4] rescued 4 crew and 1 gunner who were landed in Londonderry. 78 souls lost their lives. Unfortunately, Hazar Meah survived the attack but perished from his wounds soon afterwards.
