Turkington, G (George)
Serjeant George Turkington was the son of Thomas and Mary Turkington, of Albert St., Lurgan, Co. Armagh. He may have been 28 years old.
George suffered from enteric fever[1] for 21 days before his heart started weakening. After two days, he died from cardiac failure.[2] George’s brother John Turkington who was serving with the 5th Royal Irish Fusiliers had also been wounded at the front when he died.
The 3rd Reserve Battalion, Royal Irish Fusiliers was based in Buncrana, Donegal in April 1915. They were due to move to Clonmany during November 1916.
George was not eligible for any medals as he never left the UK or entered a theatre of war. He had a full military funeral, which took place on the 2nd of October 1915.
