Serjeant Hubert (Hugh) Weir was the son of Hugh Weir and Eileen Mary Weir, 39, Marlborough Street, Londonderry. His father Hugh had founded the Londonderry Dramatic Society and had put on regular shows during the war, he ultimately would not live long enough to see its end.

Hubert (Hugh) was a well-known and popular amateur actor in Londonderry and had joined the army at the young age of fifteen.[1] By the time he reached seventeen he had been promoted to Serjeant. He had an exceptionally long and promising career ahead of him and was about to be promoted to Battery Serjeant Major, but unfortunately was involved in an accident in Leeds, England. At the time, he tried to cross a flooded river on foot. The current was too strong, and he got swept away and drowned.

The 6th Regiment, Royal Horse Artillery did not see active service during World War 2. They were a training battalion based in England.

Serjeant Weir was buried from his father’s home on the 10th of September 1942. His coffin was taken to his last resting place on a motorised gun carriage with representatives from the Royal Artillery. The mayor of the city also attended, along with large numbers of locals.
