Belshaw, J (James)
Corporal James Belshaw served with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, 4th Battalion. He was the son of William and Elizabeth Belshaw, of 35, Jenney Mount Street, York Road, Belfast. James had originally enlisted with the Inniskillings during February 1911.
Unfortunately, Corporal Belshaw passed away in the Military Hospital, Ebrington Barracks. He had suffered for seven days from septicaemia[1] and then unfortunately on his last day he contracted septic pneumonia.[2] It is unknown why his body was not returned to his parents in Belfast for burial.
The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, 4th Battalion was also known as the Fermanagh Light Infantry and was a reserve battalion that never left Ireland. They were based in Buncrana, Donegal.
James Belshaw was not eligible for any medals as he never left the UK or entered a theatre of war.
