Lance Corporal John Bew was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Bew. Born at Caversham, Oxon. The Commonwealth War Graves have him listed as William Bew, although his death certificate is John Bew. His rank is also listed as Private when it seems he was a Lance Corporal.

William (John) was a reservist and had joined the Irish Fusiliers during August 1914 at Puttlehill camp, Clonmany, County Donegal. He had been on leave from the 24th of October 1914 and was due back on the 30th.

During the afternoon of the 28th in a field near Carrichue Railway Station, Limavady, County Londonderry, his body was found by a local farmer called Andrew Robinson. The soldier’s throat was slit, and a blood-stained razor blade was found under his body.

A Coroner Inquest on the 30th of October determined that his death was probably self-inflicted.
