Burke, J (James)

Burke, J (James)
Private James Burke was the husband of Bridget Burke, of 21, Margaret Street, Londonderry.
James last served in the 2nd Garrison Battalion, Princess Victoria’s (Royal Irish Fusiliers), but previously under service number, 27401 with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. This service is presently not traceable, and it is unknown when and with which battalion he served.
It is not known what happened to James. He did though pick up a tropical illness and had to return home to be treated. This was unsuccessful, and James Burke died from Malaria in the Military Hospital in Londonderry.
James was awarded the British War and Victory Medals. Unfortunately, no further information at present.
It is possible that James may have served in the 5th Inniskillings (who were in Egypt & Palestine at this time) or the 6th Battalion (who were in the same area.) These would be areas were Malaria could have been contracted.
