Sergeant Joseph Edmund Campbell was the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Campbell, of 1 Clifton Street, Waterside, Londonderry.

Joseph’s brother and mother had visited him in Pembroke, Pembrokeshire, South Wales for Christmas 1941 and had just left on the 27th after he had informed them that he had just passed the tests to become a warrant officer in the RAF.[1] Unknown to them they would never see the sergeant alive again as he would die in a tragic accident just two days later.

Sergeant Campbell’s remains arrived in Londonderry on the 3rd of January 1942. His body was escorted by members of the Royal Air Force.

As Joseph was being laid to rest later in the day, the last post was sounded and four wreaths from the R.A.F. were laid.
