Aircraftman 1st Class George Carlin was the son of Margaret Dowds, of the Waterside, Londonderry. His home address was 33 Halford Street, Londonderry.
George served with 272 Squadron, which had formed at Aldergrove in Northern Ireland during November 1940. It had performed a coastal defence roll with Blenheims bombers.[1]
During April 1941, the squadron was re-equipped with Beaufighters[2] in preparation to go to the Middle East on the 24th of May 1941. George would not leave with them as he fell extremely ill.
Aircraftman George Carlin passed away in the 24th (London) General Hospital, Belfast. He died from an infection that had spread throughout his body from his lungs.[3]
George’s body left from his mother’s house on the 6th of May at 2:30pm for the last time. He did not have a military funeral, but members of his squadron attended.
