Lance Corporal David Curtis was the son of Frederick William and Sarah Ann Curtis; husband of Margaret Mary Curtis, of the Waterside, Londonderry.

David’s battalion, the 2nd Battalion South Wales Borderers, were based in Londonderry during the outbreak of war. It had been there since 1936 and would then leave for England before taking part in the 62-day campaign in Norway in a vain attempt to repel the Germans.

Although the allies had some success in the more northern regions of Norway, and the Borderers had low casualties, they had to withdraw when Germany invaded France. The battalion then returned to England and then onto Northern Ireland where they would stay in defence until the invasion of France and the Normandy landings on the 6th of June 1944, when they landed on Gold Beach. They were the only Welsh battalion to land on that day. Unfortunately, by then, Lance Corporal David Henry Owen Curtis had already passed away. He died in an accident in Durham, England sixteen months before.

Unfortunately, no further information at present.
