Able Seaman Edward Cooke was serving on H.M.S. Mallow when he contracted pneumonia.

Edward passed away in the Military Hospital in the Waterside area of Londonderry suffering from emphysema (shortness of breath caused by the illness to the air sacks in the lungs) which was caused by pneumonia. The date of death on the grave marker is incorrect. He passed away on the 26th of April 1941.

He served on H.M.S. Mallow.[1] During November 1940, it would pick up survivors from the British Merchant Ship Saint Germain[2] which had been sunk by German U-boat U137.[3]

Later in her service during October 1941 (after Edward Cooke’s death), it would sink German U-boat U204[4] near Tangier, using depth charges.

[1] HMS Mallow was a Flower-class corvette and was launched May 1940, it would remain in service with various navies until 1975.

[2] All 18 of the crew survived.

[3] U-boats U137 was launched May 1940, scuttled May 1945, 0 casualties.

[4] U-boats U204 was launched January 1941, sunk October 1941, all 46-crew died.
