Pioneer Hugh Holmes was the husband of Margaret Holmes, of 17, King Street, Waterside, Londonderry.

Hugh originally served in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, 6th and 3rd Battalions (Service Number 10804) at home, then the Military Foot Police (Service Number P/5953) and finally the Royal Engineers (Service Number 612874).

While in the Military Foot Police, he served with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force from July 1915 until May 1916. but was sent home due to dysentery. He spent most of his time when home in hospital due to its side effects and then he joined the Royal Engineers.

Hugh’s cause of death is unknown at present, but happened in a hospital in Warrington, England several months after his discharge from the army.

Hugh was awarded the 1914/15 Star, the British War and Victory Medals. He was not serving at the time of his death.
