Kilcronaghan seems to take its origins from a Medieval church that was said to have been built in the 6th century. The ruins of a church on the site of the new one is said to belong to it. This church though was an Irish Celtic Christian church that Rome wished and did bring into line during the 12th century. During the 14th century there exits taxation records for the church in Rome. Three hundred years later during the Plantation of Ulster the Protestant Church of Ireland took control of the building. During this time and especially during the Irish uprising the church was the scene of many executions.

The hanging stone itself was built into a new church during 1806. As this church was built several skeletons were dug up which had gold rings, they were believed to belong to nuns and within a short period of time the new church was deemed not fit for purpose. It was proposed to build another church on neighbouring land.

During 1958 the present church was opened, and this building remains in place to this day. There is 1 Commonwealth burial of the 1939-1945 war here, a soldier for the Second World War.
