Killowen (St. John) Church of Ireland Churchyard
Killowen (St. John) Church is located within the boundaries of the town of Coleraine on the western bank of the river Bann. The use of this area dates as far back as 540AD when an Abbey was established by St. Carbreus, a disciple of St. Finian, and first bishop of Coleraine. The abbey was destroyed in 1213 and a castle built in the area. The original church, which part of the priory remained, it had been established in 1080. It was not until 1609 when King James I granted a lease for the land for a parish to the Irish Society. The old church would become a schoolhouse during 1830 on the completion of the new church, which is in use to this day. There are 3 Commonwealth burials of the 1914-1918 war and 2 of the 1939-1945 war here
