Moore, R (Robert)

Moore, R (Robert)
Ordinary Telegraphist Robert Moore was the son of John and Emily Lavinia Moore, of Bridgewater, Somerset. He served on-board H.M.C.S. St. Laurent.[1]
Robert was on his ship on the 30th of March 1943 when it was hit by a large wave which knocked him over. Unfortunately, he then hit his head under the torpedo tubes. It is unknown if he died instantly. The date of death is recorded at sea.
Only a few months earlier on the 27th of December 1942, while escorting convoy ONS-154, H.M.C.S. St. Laurent had its first victory. The Laurent was credited with sinking U-boat U356[2] using depth charges when it was encountered on the surface. This was at the beginning of an endless assault by multiple U-Boats on the convoy with the final toll of 14 ships lost.
Ships lost were Empire Union,[3] King Edward,[4] Melrose Abbey,[5] Soekaboemi,[6] Melmore Head,[7] Baron Cochrane,[8] Empire Wagtail,[9] Norse King,[10] Ville de Rouen, Lynton Grange, Zarian,[11] President Francqui,[12] Empire Shackleton, and finally HMS Fidelity.[13]
