Engineman William Napier was the son of George and Cathleen Napier; husband of Harriet Napier, of Aberdeen. He served onboard H.M.T. Merbreeze.[1]

He is listed as being a Petty Officer in the Royal Navy on his death certificate. He spent his last moments in Creevagh Hospital.

He was suffering from acute bacterial endocarditis,[2] which developed into a cerebral embolism,[3] ultimately leading to his death.

H.M. Trawler Merbreeze was originally based in Swansea before moving to Londonderry at the beginning of 1942 and would remain there until the end of the war.

[1] H.M. Trawler Merbreeze was requisitioned for war service as a minesweeping drifter during November 1939, it would survive the war, ultimately being sold for scrap during 1976.

[2] Bacterial endocarditis is an infection around the heart.

[3] Cerebral embolism is a blocking of blood to the brain.
