Warrant Aircraft Officer Edward Shipley was the son of Harry and Selina Shipley, husband of Phyllis Mercy Shipley, of 25 Gladeswood Road, Belvedere, Kent.

Edward was with his friend, Chief Petty Officer Alfred Hall in Maydown and at about 2 in the morning he left on his motorcycle to go back to the airbase in Eglinton, which was located only a few miles away. Alfred would later say that Edward was sober, and the motorcycles lights were working.

Meanwhile an RASC Driver called Michael Hanley had stopped at the junction from Station Road on the main road from Londonderry to Limavady. He looked and could see no traffic and so began to pull out. While doing so a soldier who was with him warned that he could see something approaching them. The driver braked and at almost the same time the motorcyclist smashed into the side of his 3-ton Bedford Truck. Warrant Aircraft Officer Edward Shipley died instantly.

A few days later, Edward was buried with a full Military funeral in Faughanvale (Saint Canice) Church of Ireland Churchyard. The driver of the truck would also state that the lights of the motorcycle were not on.
