Corporal Matt Simms was from 46, Nelson Street, Londonderry. His mother and father, William, and Susan Simms, lived at 10, Linenhall Street, Londonderry. His widow was Mollie Simms.
Matt Simms was on leave when he became extremely ill. The Saturday night before his death, when at the picture house, he complained of headaches and started shivering.
By Tuesday morning he could not get out of bed and a doctor was summoned. He was sent straight to the Military Hospital in Ebrington Barracks, Londonderry, where he passed away the following evening from meningitis[1] and septicaemia[2] caused by anthrax bacilli.[3]
It is unknown how he became ill. No further information is available.
