Fernie, A L (Alexander Linn)

Fernie, A L (Alexander Linn)
Midshipman Alexander Fernie was the son of William Linn Fernie and Agnes Doris Fernie; grandson of Mrs. E. M. Loch, of Ealing, Middlesex.
Alexander’s ship, H.M.S. Launceston Castle was on anti-submarine duty in the North Atlantic when Midshipman Alexander Fernie died. At the time, his mind was unbalanced, and he passed away from wounds caused by gunshots, all of which were self-inflicted.
Previously on the 11th of November 1944 this ship was part of the 30th Escort Group when U-Boat U1200[1] started stalking them (foolishly thinking they were merchant ships.) All four were allied war ships which immediately converged on her position.
U1200 was destroyed in one depth charge attack. There were no survivors.
Date of Death: 16/01/1945 (Aged 19)
Service: Midshipman, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, H.M.S. Launceston Castle.
Burial Location: Londonderry (or Derry), City Cemetery, R.C. Plot. Sec. M. Grave 12.
[1] U-Boat U1200 was launched November 1943 and sunk November 1944, 53 lost their lives.
